County Senior Services Seminar and Theatricum Outing

All seniors in the canyon are invited to join the Canyon Sages, Topanga’s free organization for seniors, for two special events in May.

On Friday, May 10, join us for another Senior School Days at the Theatricum Botanicum from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., ending in a full performance of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Twelfth Night. The cost is $18 per person with an optional additional $2 donation for our activity scholarship fund, allowing low-income seniors to participate.

In the morning, Theatricum actors speak one-on-one with the seniors in the small theater about all things Shakespeare and about the history of the Theatricum. We will serve a potluck lunch at 11 a.m. or so, followed by the show. There is limited availability, so sign up with Gail at quakergail@gmail.com. She will let you know where to send your check. If you are able, please park on the street. The theater parking lot is available for those who need it.

On Monday, May 13, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., join us at the Sages Room at the Community Center for a special presentation by Maria Mata, outreach coordinator for LA County’s Aging and Adult Services Branch of WDAC, the Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services agency.

Bring your notebooks because topics will include hard information on all the county services for seniors over 60. Seniors will find more assistance available than they might have thought. Maria will describe the Elderly Nutrition Program and the Family Caregiver Support Program. Then she’ll tackle the Linkages program, providing comprehensive care management to prevent premature institutionalization; and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program that receives and investigates complaints about care facilities.

Do you know someone over 60 needing legal assistance? The county has a program for that. County programs also offer Homemaker service, Personal Care, Respite care, Alzheimer’s Day Care Services, and a Disease Prevention and Health Promotion program.

Come with your questions and learn how to apply for these programs. This is a rare opportunity for one-stop shopping for senior services. All seniors and their families are invited. Don’t miss out!
