Pope Joan (1996) , by Donna Cross for the SEPTEMBER 12th Bookclub. Craig, the librarian, is reserving as many copies as he can for the Bookclub….but you may just have to’share’. According to Joan who recommended the novel, “It is based on a true story about a woman in the 9th century who was so exasperated by the biases and rigid restrictions of what women couldn’t do, that she chose to live her life disguised as a man. From childhood, brilliant and talented Joan triumphs over tremendous odds to ultimately attain the highest office in Christendom and become the only female Pope ( which of course comes with a price). One critic says , “ Pope Joan has all the elements one wants in an historical drama—love, sex, violence, duplicity, …and is a fascinating, vivid record and harrowing tale of what life was really like during the so-called Dark Ages”.
