First Friday Films
July 5 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
An event every month that begins at 7:00 pm on day First of the month, repeating until December 31, 2019
The Friday Film for July will be “ELEELÉ – Tell me; The Unheard Feminine Voice of the Middle East” with local Topanga filmmaker, Soula Saad. Often hidden, silenced and unexposed, Middle-Eastern women are presented in this film speaking up in contrast to the interpellation; the embedded ideology of Middle Eastern culture. ELEELÉ takes you into the labyrinth of different subcultures & social backgrounds of Middle-Eastern society, to meet 28 women who take us far from the submissive, victimized Arab woman cliché.
After the film we will have a discussion with the filmmaker and award winning writer, director, and producer; Soula Saad. Since 1994 Soula has written, directed, filmed, produced, and/or narrated dozens of projects. Her prior works include “Beirut Rising” a feature documentary on the youth uprising following the assassination of Lebanon’s prime minister in 2005, which turned into the largest non-violent protest in the middle east. Beirut Rising was Premiered at the Museum of Television in New York and was selected at the Festival cinéma-vérité in Paris as well as the London International Film Festival. Soula is also on the Advisory Board of the Topanga Film Institute.
Before the film we will be entertained by Sahar, the percussionist seen opening the film, so be sure to come before 7:15!
After the film and discussion, there will be a musical salon across the street at Corazon Performing Arts.
***Please try to bring your own bowl and cloth napkin, so we can reduce the waste created by this event. ***
