The Topanga Historical Society Presents: Fall Picnic & Presentation
November 3, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
THE TOPANGA HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S FALL COMMUNITY PICNIC & PRESENTATION ON TOPANGA CREEK
Longtime Topanga resident, activist, and defender of our environment, Susan Nissman, to speak about successful efforts to keep Topanga’s beautiful creek natural and protected instead of becoming just another engineered floodway
(Topanga, CA) – The Topanga Historical Society is excited as all get-out to announce its latest event, a pleasant afternoon picnic and presentation at the personal residence of Topanga local, Keith Wilbur, located at 1475 North Topanga Canyon Blvd., next to the Theatricum Botanicum and directly across from the entrance to the Topanga Community Center.
The picnic will be a festive and relaxing afternoon of great food and drink where members of the community can come together to celebrate the Autumn season in the canyon while learning some interesting local history. Please bring your best fall-time, picnic-ey dish or something tasty to drink (we all like wine lol) and spend some quality time with other cool canyon dwellers. Also, please bring your folding lawn chairs if you have them. We have limited seating available so the more chairs the better!
The Topanga Historical Society is very gracious to our featured speaker, long-time Topanga local, activist, and defender of the environment, Susan Nissman, who was the Santa Monica Mountains’ Watershed Management and Water Quality lead policy deputy for former Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky (1994-2014). During our picnic, Nissman will be speaking about how Topanga Creek became recognized holistically as the source of a living Watershed, to be protected and managed, versus becoming an overly-regulated, mapped and engineered Floodway, oblivious to the value of a natural, unobstructed, free-running creek at the core of our beautiful canyon’s ecology.
Nissman is an expert with first-hand knowledge of Topanga’s fight to keep our creek from becoming just another long concrete culvert, so this presentation is sure to be enlightening! And interestingly enough, Wilbur’s property lies directly on Topanga creek so we’ll be AT the creek, talking ABOUT the creek. How perfect!
