The Topanga Peace Alliance 172nd Consecutive First Friday Film Night “This is Congo”
September 6 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
“This is Congo”
Friday, September 6th, at the Topanga Library
Snack Pot Luck at 7:15, Movie 7:30
THIS IS CONGO dramatically portrays the realities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a huge country roughly two-thirds the size of Western Europe. It provides an unfiltered look into Africa’s longest continuing conflict and those who are surviving within it. By following four compelling characters — a whistleblower, a patriotic military commander, a mineral dealer, and a displaced tailor — the film offers viewers a truly Congolese perspective on the problems that plague this lushly beautiful nation.
Most of us are not well educated on the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the larger backdrop of African politics. THIS IS CONGO shows the background of the nation; the legacies of colonialism, resource exploitation, corruption, the Rwandan and Ugandan backed the rebels, and the genocide that helped make the Congo what it is today.
Before the film, we will have announcements regarding upcoming events and actions for peace and social justice including our Military Opt Out drive and the actions planned by Extinction Rebellion L.A. (see below)
After the film we will have a discussion regarding the current situation in the DRC and Africa with Sandra Bacall, who spent three years in Africa.
