After a successful debut last November, Poetry at Café 27 resumes with a double feature and open mic on Sunday, March 1, 4-6 p.m., that will honor Women’s History Month.
The featured poet, Jean Colonomos, will read selections from her larger work, Eve Everywhere, as yet unpublished. In this riff on the Old Testament, Colonomos says, “Eve has been and is still reviled. Without Eve’s daring action, the human race wouldn’t be here.”
Ann Buxie will then partner with Colonomos in a reading from Hinging, an episodic poem where one story is introduced into another. “As we listen to each other, it arouses a response. We stitched our lives together in a patchwork of thoughts and inspirations,” Buxie said.
Jean Colonomos began her career in the arts as a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company. As a playwright, her work has been produced in New York City, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Edinburgh, Scotland. Her poetry has been published online and in several poetry journals. Writing with poet Ann Buxie, their new work, KNOCK KNOCK, has been featured at the EP Foster Library, the Library of Thousand Oaks, and Beyond Baroque. Her chapbook, Art Farm, is published by Finishing Line Press.
Ann Buxie co-hosts Tales by the Sea, a storytelling series in Malibu that began in 1995. She received her Ph.D. in Mythology from Pacifica Graduate Institute but became ever more dedicated to poetry and storytelling, “the use of words to change our perceptions, even our culture, and to create community,” she says. Buxie has been published in assorted anthologies.
A short break will follow the double feature, where guests can enjoy complimentary light refreshments, generously provided by Café 27 owner Amir Rofougaran, and time to discuss the poems with the authors, before the Open Mic session (No epics please) begins. Books will be available for purchase.
Depending on demand for this event, we hope Poetry at Café 27 becomes a monthly venue for poets to present their work and attend occasional workshops.

On Thursday, March 26, Ann Buxie will be presenting a workshop at Café 27, 4-6 p.m., that will introduce the ghazal form. She will read a poem by Hafiz to illustrate the form and how to adapt its style, and then, she says, “A prompt, and the poets’ imagination will be the material for our poems.” Poets should come ready to write and read their ghazal poems,
