Hot Weather Warning

The dog days of summer have arrived on the heels of the Southland’s third major heatwave, and more triple-digit temperatures are on the way.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is urging residents to drink lots of non-alcoholic, caffeine-free beverages, take advantage of air-conditioned cooling centers, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. They also encourage people to check regularly on elderly or home-bound relatives and friends.

Humans aren’t the only ones at risk: at least one dog has already died of heat stroke during a hike. Some breeds can become dangerously overheated without showing symptoms.

Malibu Search and Rescue is experiencing high numbers of heat related rescues in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and is cautioning everyone to be aware of the symptoms of heat illness. They recommend planning to do hot-weather outdoor activities early in the morning, and leaving dogs at home during the hottest part of the day.
