Loose Lips Features Poet Ángel Garcia

Join co-hosts Millicent Borges-Accardi and Jean Colonomos at the Topanga Library for an afternoon of poetic immersion on October 20, 2-4 p.m., featuring poet Ángel García, author of Teeth Never Sleep, winner of the 2018 CantoMundo Poetry Prize, which will be published by the University of Arkansas Press in the Fall of 2018.

García is currently a Ph.D. student in Creative Writing at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He earned a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Redlands and an M.F.A. from the University of California, Riverside. His work has been published in the American Poetry Review, Miramar, McSweeney’s, Huizache, and The Good Men Project, among others. He has received fellowships from CantoMundo, Community of Writers-Squaw Valley, and Vermont Studio Center.

In addition to his creative work, Ángel is also the cofounder of a non-profit organization, Gente Organizada, that works to educate, empower, and engage communities through grassroots organizing.

Loose Lips is dedicated to bringing a diverse array of the best contemporary poets to Topanga and to provide audiences and authors with a poetic forum and community. Our commitment is to deliver literary events which are edgy, spiritual, inspiring, and at times, irreverent.

The reading is followed by an open mic (one poem, please, no epics). Tea and cookie refreshments are provided by Friends of the Topanga Library. The reading is free and open to the public. Children are welcome in the children’s reading area, but the Loose Lips reading in the meeting room is meant for an adult audience.

Topanga Library is located at 122 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga, CA 90290. Parking in the garage is free. The library is wheelchair accessible.

Poetry Reading: “The Terrible Need for Two”—On Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., Malibu Poet Laureate Ricardo Means Ybarra will host poets Ann Buxie and Jean Colonomos, who will perform their new work, “The Terrible Need for Two,” a collaboration that celebrates the deep friendship between two women. “It’s funny and moving from our heart and soul,” they say.

“The Terrible Need for Two” takes about 20 minutes to perform and is the second performance for them. The first was sponsored by Phil Taggart, Marsha de la O, and Friday Gretchen, at the EP Foster Library in August.

Bring a poem to share in an open mic after the break to the Malibu Library is located at 23519 Civic Center Way, Malibu. Free parking.
