Marching for Reproductive Rights

On May 21, protesters gathered in more than 400 cities across America to protest the recent wave of extreme anti-abortion legislation in states like Alabama and Georgia.

The National Day of Action to Stop the Bans was sponsored by 50 organizations, including ACLU, EMILY’s List, Indivisible, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, UltraViolet, and Women’s March.

According to NARAL (National Reproductive Rights Action League), nearly 30 bans on abortion have been introduced, passed, or signed into law in statehouses around the country just this year, with Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, and Texas leading an apparent race to see which state can craft the most prohibitive law in a deliberate effort to challenge Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that affirmed that access to safe and legal abortion is a constitutional right.

More than two-dozen protesters gathered at the corner of Cross Creek Road and Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. The group included students from Malibu High School, Malibu sage and lifelong activist Carol Moss, Malibu Mayor Jefferson Wagner, and celebrated documentary filmmaker and activist Rory Kennedy.

“We march in support of women everywhere, especially in states that have passed laws to suppress women’s civil and reproductive rights,” said Alexis Aria, one of the Malibu march organizers.
