Student Artists Reception, Dec. 6

Velvet Marshall’s class at the Topanga Community Center.

Eight artists, some who have never painted before, will be featured and feted at an artists’ reception, at the Topanga Library on Wednesday, December 6, at 1 p.m.

Joanne Martinez, Pat Lukes, Joanne Helfrich, Mary Dippel, Marianne Garde Bordier, Ellen South, Tricia Hoye and Victoria Nichols are students of local artist Velvet Marshall’s class series, Introduction to Acrylics, who curates exhibits at the Library.

The six-week two-hour adult workshops, sponsored by the Canyon Sages, are held at the Topanga Community Center. The current workshop on Color Field painting techniques began Tuesday, November 7, 1-3 p.m., and continues on November 22, 29 and December 13.

The artists’ reception is free and small bites and refreshments will be served.

Marshall uses demonstrations and individual help to teach attendees the basic acrylic techniques and facts. Students learn about washes, glazing, dry-brush, wet-on-dry and wet-in-wet painting, how to use acrylic in different ways, color mixing and composition, how to use a full value range to turn a painting from bland to dramatic, as well as values and their role in painting. The intro class is $20 per class designed for those who are inexperienced and those who want to improve their skills. Students work at their own pace on a variety of pieces. Each class focuses on a different skill-building technique.

The Topanga Community Center located at: 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga, CA. 90290.
