The Santa Monica College Music Department presents SMC Opera Theatre in a performance of The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most popular operas. The production features the SMC Symphony Orchestra, full staging and costuming.

Performances will be held in The Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th Street (at Santa Monica Boulevard), Santa Monica. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Saturday, May 17-18. Matinee performance at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

The Magic Flute tells the story of mythical lands between the sun and the moon, where Prince Tamino accepts a quest to save Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night.

The two-act opera, written by Mozart to a libretto in German by Austrian theatrical producer and actor Emanuel Schikaneder, is styled as a singspiel, combining musical numbers with spoken dialog. The opera will be sung in German with English supertitles, with spoken dialogue in English.

The Magic Flute has something for everyone – Mozart’s beautiful music, with heart and comedy, set almost as a kind of fairy tale.  This is a great opera for young and old. Even if you are not very familiar with opera, you will recognize the famous “Queen of the Night Aria” with its impressive runs and high notes – it has been featured in many commercials and movies.  It’s quite a tour de force!,” said SMC Voice Professor Dr. Janelle DeStefano, who co-directs SMC Opera Theatre with SMC Coach/Accompanist Mercedes Juan Musotto.
