TPA First Friday Film, October 6

The Topanga Peace Alliance (TPA) presents its 150th consecutive First Friday Film Night with Water & Power: A California Heist on Friday, October 6, at the Topanga Library.

The documentary uncovers the alarming exploits of California’s most notorious water barons who profit from the state’s resource while everyday citizens, unincorporated towns and small farmers endure a debilitating water crisis.

Peeling back the layers of a manipulative, backroom rewrite of California’s water contracts in the 1990s, the film investigates today’s rise of luxury crops and illicit water transfers, all in the face of record drought. As the divide between water haves and have-nots grows, we face a humbling reality: water is the new oil, and as it becomes less accessible, it is rapidly growing more valuable.  Directed by Emmy award-winning Marina Zenovich and produced by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney, the film unfolds like a real-life version of the 1974 film noir “Chinatown.”

There will be a discussion following the film led by speakers from Food and Water Watch’s California team.

Come early for announcements regarding upcoming events and actions for peace and social justice.

Bring a non-alcoholic beverage or vegetarian potluck snacks to share for the Veggie Snack Pot Luck at 7:15 p.m. The movie starts at 7:30 p.m.

The event is ADA compliant with plenty of easy parking, elevator access and headphones for those who need a little extra volume. A $10 donation is requested, but no one is turned away for lack of funds.
