On April 1st, celebrated author and expert to walk and talk butterflies all day long
Mark your calendars for April 1, when Butterfly authority, Fred Heath, a former Topanga resident and author of, “An Introduction to Southern California Butterflies,” will be giving two amazing presentations on what he calls “the poster children of the insect world,” namely, butterflies!

Butterfly Walk begins at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Join Fred Heath at Trippet Ranch for this event hosted under the auspices of the Topanga Canyon Docents. Be sure to get there early enough to get a parking spot or you could be left behind–literally. Binoculars are recommended. Be prepared to walk a few miles. Learn how to identify some of the 89 species of local butterflies, along with their favorite habitats and food plants. Witness their beauty and grace up close and personal.
Suggestion: Bring your lunch and eat it at the Visitor Center before heading over to the Mermaid.

Book Signing at The Mermaid Historic Site and Gardens, 1:30 p.m. Fred Heath will show dozens of glorious color photographs of local butterflies and moths by renown naturalist photographer, Herbert Clarke. Signed copies of, “An Introduction to Southern California Butterflies” will be available for purchase. Learn about exactly what a butterfly is and how it is distinguished from a moth. Learn about their astonishing life cycle, survival strategies, and how to create a garden that butterflies will find irresistible.
Live Butterfly and Butterfly Plant Display, staged by Sergio, Yaotl and Luna Jimenez, will feature butterfly food and nectar plants and live specimens of butterflies in their various stages as egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and as colorful winged adults.
