Topanga residents Amy and Pete Favat moved into their home about two years ago and are hosting a charity art auction, “100 Pieces,” on Thursday, May 9, to raise funds for Safe Place for Youth (SPY), a drop-in center for at-risk and homeless youth in Venice, where Amy is a full-time volunteer and serves on their board of directors.
In 2015, Amy, Pete, and their friends Chris Buzzell and Melissa Ross, created the auction, hoping to receive at least 100 pieces.
“Our first year we received well over 100 pieces and raised more than $50,000 via a silent auction,” says Amy.
Now in its fourth year, the team is inviting Topanga artists to submit their works. To date, the list includes Topanga artists Chuck Blackwell, Peter Kagan, Mitt Seely, Brian Kaufman, Prince Zapata, and Gabriel Hacker.
Amy says the goal of the event is to bring the community together and increase awareness of the issue of youth homelessness. “Any material overhead costs are personally absorbed by us to put on the event. We are fortunate as every year the event venue space is donated to us, as is all the beer and wine for our guests. We also create the gallery space ourselves by repurposing recycled flats from LA productions that our team sources from a not-for-profit called EcoSet Consulting.”
Artists do not receive a cut, but they do receive a tax donation letter from SPY if their artwork sells.
The deadline to submit is May 1. All art submitted is a 100 percent donation. All hanging art submitted must be framed or mounted to allow it to be hung properly with hardware attached. Artists are asked for permission to use their art in press and social posts to promote the event and the cause.
Art drop-off times are Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26, and Monday, April 29 through Wednesday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at: Steelhead, 12901 W Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066. All LA artists are responsible for dropping off their art. Artists are responsible for shipping.
100 percent of the proceeds raised at the event go directly to Safe Place for Youth (SPY).
“100 Pieces” takes place from 7-11 p.m. (auction closes at 10 p.m.) on Thursday, May 9, at Steelhead, 12901 W. Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066.
