Poet Ava Sel, now 15, broke into the literary world at the age of fourteen with her collection of poetry titled Mom Said, I Said. Loosely based on translations of her mother’s poems, Sel creates her own narrative, providing an empowering perspective of an immigrant teenager in the United States in the 21st century.
Touching on several different issues representing the emotions and knowledge Sel acquired through travelling across horizons, Mom Said, I Said is an attempt to define the truth, but also spread positivity and change amongst its readers.
As the title suggests, Sel attributes her inspiration solely to her mother. “I wrote this book to pay an homage to the sacrifices that my mother has made for me and the difficulties that she has been through.”
A cleverly curated collection, Mom Said, I Said is one that will have literary critics in awe over this young writer’s ability to strike a cord with her readers.
Mom Said, I Said, published by Austin Macauley, will be released on March 29, 2019.
