Join Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore (AASMMS) on Sunday March 25, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center for an art exhibit and sale featuring 20 local artists displaying representational landscape and seascape paintings of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
The event is in support of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Western National Park Association (WNPA), Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT), and National Park Service (NPS). NWF will provide information about the proposed Liberty Canyon Wildlife Crossing and #SaveLACougars. The Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT), a land trust in the Santa Monica Mountains that works with local communities to protect the unique biodiversity of the Santa Monica Mountains, will also provide information about their programs.
The Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains was founded more than 20 years ago to paint and preserve the unique natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA).
The 156,000-acre recreation area stretches from Runyon and Franklin Canyons in Hollywood to Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County and contains more 500 miles of trails including the 67-mile long Backbone Trail that follows the crest of the coastal mountains from Will Rogers State Historic Park to Point Mugu State Park. Members of Allied Artists organize exhibitions of their paintings to raise money and increase public awareness of the endangered land they depict in their paintings. Collaborating with local, state and national agencies, they present several exhibits a year in local and natural settings throughout the SMMNRA. AASMMS also sponsors free monthly paint-outs on the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at various locations throughout the recreation area. A painting demonstration and friendly critique are usually held at the paint-outs, which are open to any artist, media and skill level.
