The Mountain Mermaid will host a presentation and book signing by Dr. Allan Schoenherr, naturalist, educator and author, on November 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Schoenherr is a recognized authority on California and the author of two major books on the state: “A Natural History of California” and “Natural History of the Islands of California.” His latest book, “Wild and Beautiful: A Natural History of Open Spaces in Orange County,” was just recently published. Allan’s exceptional photographs can be found in all of his books.
The presentation will be based on the second edition of “A Natural History of California,” with copies available for purchase and signed by the author.
Dr. Schoenherr, whose academic interests include ecology, biogeography and endangered species, has traveled, hiked and photographed all over the world. He has led month-long excursions into the Sierra Nevada and has been the naturalist on many shipboard excursions to Iceland, Greenland, Russia, Alaska, the Arctic, the Antarctic, Baja California, South Pacific, Caribbean. As a biology professor on the Semester at Sea program, he has traveled around the world four times while teaching marine biology and ecology.
He is an emeritus Professor of biology at Fullerton College but has also taught at UC Irvine, CSU Fullerton, UC Riverside and CSU San Bernardino. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from USC and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He was awarded Teacher of the Year by faculty and students of Fullerton College.
