Topanga Produce Exchange

The first Topanga Produce Exchange of the season takes place tomorrow, Saturday, April 7, 9:30 a.m. near the Children’s Organic Garden at the Topanga Community Center.

The Exchange, which will meet the first Saturday of the month until winter sets in,  accepts fresh organic produce: fruits, vegetables, edible herbs, fresh baked goods. preserves, honey, or other easily-divided prepared food items. Bring your own containers and egg cartons. For eggs, bring them in cartons or protective packaging.

The Topanga Produce Exchange is a member of the Seed Library of Los Angeles (SLOLA), a depository of seeds held in trust for community gardeners who are members of that library. All seeds are free to members, who borrow seed for their garden, grow the plants, then at the end of the season, let a few plants go to seed, which they collect and return to the Library to replenish its inventory. Since seed is a living thing, it must be renewed each year somewhere by someone or unique varietals can become extinct. Even growing one seed and returning it to the library is a valuable contribution.

SLOLA provides free gardening workshops in Venice Beach at The Learning Garden; the Woodland Hills Branch Library; the Altadena Branch Library; and Encino community garden.
