Messenger Mountain News celebrates its third annual Earth Day event on April 27, with a theme of “Topanga Gold.”
Our Earth Day celebration this year has an expanded venue, expanded time frame, and dozens of booths offering sustainability products, information, workshops, and entertainment for all ages.
This year’s event will be a fundraising effort to support our new Community Composting Hub that will be installed May 4, at the Topanga Community Center. Community members contribute their kitchen organics to the compost bins and will get credits toward earning the rich earthy results, Topanga Gold, for their home gardens.
Wonderful educational workshops are scheduled: Local Wildlife with Molly Hogan of Nature of Wildworks; Composting basics where your questions will be answered by Michael Martinez, founder of LACompost.org, our Topanga Gold sponsor; and marvel at the lively and eerie collection of unusual insects that “the Bug Guy” brings every year and learn some little known facts about their habitats and lifestyles.
Earth Day booths are now available for $100 each (non-profits pay $50) and we encourage everyone to sign up early at topangaearthday.com as space is limited. Booths offering earth-minded retail, food and drink products will be favored for the hundreds of attendees we expect this year. The event features at least two food trucks that will be on hand for snacks and lunches.
Kids events include bouncy tents, crafts, a puppet show, music and more. Later in the day, adults can open their chakras with “Plein Air Yoga,” enjoy music from local bands, with the Greenhorn Brothers headlining; and, “Movies under the Stars” presented by Topanga Film Institute. A wonderful picnic box dinner and open bar will be available throughout the evening.
We are looking for volunteers to help out before, during, and after the day of the event. Earn community service credit. All volunteers will receive an Earth Day 2017 t-shirt. More information at topangaearthday.com.
