Sustainability Certificate Classes

The Santa Monica College Earth Science Department is pleased to announce the availability of three new noncredit and free Sustainability Systems & Technology (SST) certificates.

The Organics Aide certificate includes three classes: Fundamentals of Sustainability, Organics Recycling, and Sustainable Food Systems. Each class provides 36-hours of instruction, including presentations, field trips, and lab. The initial six-week certificate program runs from June 18 through July 25. What is the Sustainability Systems & Technology (SST) Certificates Program?

The SST certificates program is for individuals and students desiring to learn and earn in the new circular economy, by kick-starting a job in the burgeoning field of sustainable materials management, and be a step ahead in the job market. The SST certificates program offers three (3) different sustainability certificates:

Organics Aide: Offered in Summer 2019. This certificate introduces students to sustainability principles, practices in organic micro-composting, and sustainable food systems. Completion provides a pathway to jobs as entry-level micro-composter operators, sustainable food system technicians, sales representatives, and entry-level managerial assistants. 

Administrative Assistant (Tentatively offered for winter 2020). This certificate introduces students to sustainability principles; community engagement, education and outreach; policy and governance. Completion provides a pathway to jobs as entry-level sustainability assistants and coordinators, community engagement representatives, research assistants, customer service representatives, and project management assistants.

Services Technician (Tentatively offered for winter 2020). This certificate introduces students to sustainability principles; materials and environmental assessment methods; and clean technology systems and practices. Completion provides a pathway to jobs as entry-level sustainability assessors, program technicians, sales representatives, and entry-level managerial assistants.
