Topanga Symphony Free Concert, October 29

October 29 at 3 p.m., brings back to the stage two of the orchestra’s favorite soloists: principal clarinetist since 2003, Jim Stanley, and nationally renowned violist Pamela Goldsmith, who will perform the “Double Concerto for Clarinet and Viola, Op. 88” by Max Bruch. This unique pairing combines the distinctive sounds of the two instruments played by the exquisite talents of these two musicians.

Both Stanley and Goldsmith were soloists with the Topanga Symphony in 2015. Ms. Goldsmith performed Alan Shulman’s “Theme and Variations for Viola & Orchestra” on August 23 at the 100th performance of the Topanga Symphony. She currently plays on a gorgeous, dark-brown wood Gasparo da Salo viola, circa 1580, that has double purfling (a ripple effect) and inlaid border, fleur de lys on the back with a carved head on the scroll. Ms. Goldsmith brings to life the deep, rich tone colors of the amazing viola.

Jim Stanley most recently performed “Concertino for Clarinet” by Carl Maria von Weber with the orchestra on November 8, 2015. His virtuoso talent highlights the wide range of high and low tones that the clarinet uniquely possesses. Both musicians also recently performed at the Fourth Annual Topanga Symphony Fundraiser that was held at the home of Teresa and Bruce Royer.

Also on the program are “Concerto Grosso, Op. 3 No. 2” by 18th century violinist Francesco Geminiani, and “Enigma Variations, Op. 36” by English composer Edward Elgar. This piece is composed of 14 variations on a theme that is often considered to have a hidden mystery. Invite friends and family to join you at the concert. As you listen you can attempt to unravel the hidden enigma.

The Topanga Symphony has presented three free concerts each year at the Community House since 1982.
