Perspectivas—Points of View

Almost a year ago, three artists, all co-owners of the Topanga Canyon Gallery, decided to use the wide diversity in their styles and mediums to illustrate their view of specific locations around Los Angeles. They are each ardent fans of our city, beaches, and mountains, and knew they had a wealth of choices to illustrate and contrast their individual visions. The first step was to choose the locations. Each came up with a long list and simply found the seven selections they had in common, in priority order. As simple as that. Then the work began. The results can be seen at the Gallery through September 26.

How does Malibu Pier look represented by the unique self-developed collage technique of Moises Mendoza, compared to the panoramic photography of Don Holtz or in plein air oils by Russell Hunziker? Did they choose to see it at sunrise, or sunset or in full light?

Together, they capture the essence of each location. Their views of a lifeguard station, or Griffith Observatory, are wildly different and yet speak entirely of the place. How each chose to represent the LA River and its bridges will invite the curious to see for themselves. Leo Carrillo State Beach, Topanga State Park, and El Matador State Beach are rarely represented with as much perspective as seen when the three mediums and styles sit side by side.

This show is about how each of the artists views his surroundings and as Don Holtz says, “We all have a story to tell each other about how we see things, how we view the world.”
