Here is the Town Council entry application on behalf of Topanga’s Emergency Fair:

·         Project Category Education/Awareness
·         Proposed Project: Dear NFPA,

Our local nonprofit emergency organizations (all volunteer) in Topanga, CA will join forces with Los Angeles County’s Fire Department to host the 2019 Topanga Emergency Preparedness Fair on Sunday, May 5th at our community center. With the recent Woolsey Fire that destroyed many of our neighboring communities, we feel it is vital to do a community outreach stressing the importance that ALL OF US be prepared for a wildfire. Topanga is much like the town of Paradise that was completely destroyed a few months ago by wildfire. The difference is that they have four ways to exit their community and we have only two. Needless to say, we were very lucky to have survived the Woolsey Fire—it came within minutes of our town and we did evacuate for 8 days. Another challenge for us was that ALL communication lines were down—most people did not receive the evacuation order because we had just lost all power—phone lines, cell phones, TV and internet. Our 2019 Emergency Fair’s theme is, “Topanga Unplugged”. We have to be bettered prepared to respond to fires the old fashion way—just in case.

So, our fair will emphasize the importance of multiple communication avenues (backup power, ham radio training, social media alert signups), hardening your home (our fire ember replica house and emergency related vendors), small and large animal preparedness (law enforcement trailer inspections and microchipping), Topanga Resident Access Cards (for evacuations by zone number), and much more.

If we are so lucky to be a recipient of your award, we will spend the money for promotion of this important event, which includes a preparedness week prior to the fair (school drill, business outreach, etc). We would like to do a direct mailer to the residents and businesses. With the recent fire, we discovered a vulnerable population —our businesses, children and seniors/disabled. We are creating special events and programs that will give them helpful survival information and skills.

Another unfortunate area that suffered from the fire was our surrounding park lands, much of which was destroyed in the fire making the wildlife stressed in finding shelter and food. We will have our local Resource Conservation District represented at the fair to teach us how to address this issue.

After the recent fires, we now truly understand that our lives and property depend on SMART PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE. What one person does or doesn’t do can affect the entire community. We hope you will help us achieve our goal in preparing our town for the next wildfire.
