What’s on Your Walls?

Sequoia Visitor 2013-2014 monotype 14″ x 10″ by Kate Browning

Did you attend the reception at Topanga Canyon Gallery last Saturday evening? If not, there is still time to see and purchase works by Ellen South, Eugenia Shapiro, Kate Browning, and Susan Nissman.

Eugenia’s new work is not to be missed. The sense of balance and depth in her oil portraits is remarkable. Ellen South explores facial expressions, emotions and the human form. Kate Browning brings us abstract landscapes from an area she loves, painted on upstretched canvas.

These works drape the walls toward the back of the gallery, leaving you feeling like you have been on a wonderful journey. Susan’s hand-built ceramic pieces explore tactile finishes in soothing colors. Taken together, this exhibit of art by four female artists is a treat for the eyes and imagination.

The next exhibit, “Earth and Sky,” begins at the gallery on September 5, when Moises Mendoza, Jonna Gill, Connie Cambardella, and Donna Geist Buch explore the celestial above, terra firma below, and the space where they meet.

Each artist has a very unique vision of landscape, explored in mediums ranging from tactile collage to photography. Because each of these artists focuses on nature and our view of the world through that lens, they have dedicated this show to California Wildlife Center (CWC).

The CWC is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and protection of native California species, which otherwise would be left to suffer from the effects of human encroachment, habitat destruction, and environmental damage. A percentage of each artwork sold during this show will be donated to the CWC to support education and conservation programs.

As we move into autumn, mark your calendars for the opening on October 3 of “Does it Matter?”

Does art matter? Does air matter? Does voting matter? Does color matter? Each of the artists in this show proposes what matters—or what doesn’t—expressed in their own mediums and words. Come decide what matters to you—and what doesn’t.
